Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by the mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor fit there. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. The stage was her main focus and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
